Our Mission: Empowering Christian Leaders
The Minnesota Walk to Emmaus is an ecumenical lay-led movement with a single purpose: to empower Christian leaders to be the hands and feet of Christ in their homes, workplaces, and local congregations. We believe that when a leader is renewed in God's grace, the entire Church flourishes.
Through our 72-hour retreats, we provide a sacred space for individuals to disconnect from the noise of the world and reconnect with their primary calling: to follow Jesus and serve His people.
The Purpose: Empowerment for Service
The ultimate mission of Emmaus is to "Empower Leaders to be the hands and feet of Christ". The weekend is designed to inspire and equip you to "Christianize" your environments—meaning you return to your home, workplace, and local congregation with a renewed commitment to serve as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Our Global Heritage
A Global and Ecumenical Movement
The movement is an adaptation of the Roman Catholic Cursillo (meaning "little course in Christianity") movement that began in Spain in 1949. In 1978, The Upper Room adapted the program for a Protestant audience, officially naming it "The Walk to Emmaus" in 1981. Today, it remains a highly disciplined ministry conducted according to a standard manual used by communities worldwide to ensure a trustworthy and consistent experience for every Pilgrim.
Though Emmaus is grounded in the tradition of The United Methodist Church, it is profoundly ecumenical. It welcomes Christians from all denominations with the goal of fostering unity and reinforcing the entire Christian community. Rather than focusing on denominational differences, Emmaus accentuates the essential features of faith that Christians have traditionally held in common.
Community Leadership
Our community is guided by a dedicated Board of Directors—volunteers who have walked this journey themselves. We ensure the integrity of the Emmaus model while supporting local reunion groups and weekend teams.
